‘S e baile de choinneamhan gun dùil, sgàilean bagairteach is tuiltean gun fhois a th’ ann am Beanas aig Crìsdean MacIlleBhàin, baile de fhialaidheachd nach gabh ro-innse agus de charaidean dìleas a’ strì ri milleadh turasachd mòr-sgèile. Tha ceithir sonaidean deug le Rilke air an eadar-theangachadh gu Gàidhlig is Beurla, còmhla ri sreathan eile a dhèiligeas ri ainglean, ri Ruaraidh MacThòmais agus Somhairle MacGill-Eain agus ri baile beag san sgìre Eadailtich Abruzzi.

Christopher Whyte’s Venice is a city of chance encounters, intermittent flooding and menacing shadows, of unpredictable generosity and faithful friends who stubbornly resist the ravages of mass tourism. Fourteen sonnets by Rilke appear in Gaelic and English translations. Further sequences deal with angels, with the two contrasting giants of late twentieth century Gaelic poetry – Derick Thomson and Sorley MacLean – and a mountain village in the Italian Abruzzi.

The Gaelic texts are accompanied by English translations by the author.
